So this is the material fringe project. A few sheets of newspaper are folded together then fed into a shredder creating varying lengths of fringe. They are then assembled together to create a sheet of varying fringe lengths that create a grade of fluff. The structure is just used as an armature. It is essentially a torqued tent frame.

The idea is to utilize material, color, texture and light to enhance sensibilities of space. It is more of a reaction to purist, Modernist ideas about material working from the "decor" of 80s postmodernism and into building cosmetics. Eisenman vs. Herzog and de Meuron.

Pictures coming soon. however here are some diagrams to keep you busy.

Yes it's a box and it's beautiful

Exterior watercolor of the GSP expansion comprehensive project. I'm working with Jessica Jeager. And she is pretty much awesome. The project uses dark and light as a way to direct movement. Light fills this 4 story space where the top two stories break above the ground bringing light into the bottom two stories which are submerged underground. The entry to the airport is underground allowing a public garden to surround the box and creating an architecture to emerge in the forest and surrounding landscape.

We are still working on a shading device which must celebrate the glass box without covering it and dissolving its idea.

Any ideas? Continue

glass menagerie final model

I had a lot of fun lighting this model.  It was interesting to go back and explore the show from a different perspective.  I wanted to create a space that was ethereal but at the same time had the menacing and heavy presence of a collapsed building.  The structural elements are inspired by rays of light through a fire stair.  I think if I take more photos, I would have some with the background structures totally blacked out, which I think would help soften the space.

Working on "The Hothouse" by Harold Pinter next.

mooresy va reading project

"When insomnia, which is the philosopher's ailment, is increased through irritation caused by city noises; or when, late at night, the hum of automobiles and trucks rumbling through the Place Maubert causes me to curse my city dweller's fate, I can recover my calm by living the metaphors of the ocean. We all know that the big city is a clamorous sea, and it has been said countless times that, in the heart of the night in Paris, one hears the ceaseless murmur of flood and tide. So I make a sincere image out of these hackneyed ones, an image that is as much my own as though I myself had invented it, in line with my gentle mania for always believing that I am the subject of what I am thinking."

HEYGUYSIT'SBEENTOOLONGWESHOULDCATCHUP. all of us. (I stole to keep it going)

I am taking "the material fringe" this semester which is a workshop that discusses the underlying theories of material, their effect, and their sensibility. We discuss past and current concepts regarding this subject through readings while learning the analytical and digital tools needed to approach this subject physically (Maya, Grasshopper, CNC). My group and I have chosen shredded paper as material to explore from wood ends, wood block, glass cullet, retired asphalt shingles and bark. A form work will also be explored in the same way to support and fuse the CNC with the untraditional material. The final development will be approximately the size of a door or small wall, but there is not a real limitation. Color and its application will be generated for the final construction, as well. If you have a tumblr we to post regularly to update the class. Follow aqui http://www.tumblr.com/tumblelog/materialfringe . I will post photos of initial explorations soon.

A storm rolled in from across the plains and emptied itself in the Mississippi..

Night lightning. Continuous shutter @ 1-second intervals over 2+ minutes.
There are dark calms and frying jolts like an argument between clouds.
The light is silent but the darkness growls.
(And in all things, patterns, how recharging cloud energy is bundled in the dark lapses,
how the seconds between light and thunder measure the distance between you and all that violence.)

a me scenic design/architecture class

I am way too excited about this class:

"This seminar begins a two-quarter sequence exploring the theory, design, and fabrication of scenery for live performance that is physically transformable, site-specific, and designed to incorporate projected digital media. The course will draw from literature on multimedia performance, architectural theory, and theatrical scenography, as well as construction and performance techniques from a variety of disciplines. Students' final collaborative projects will develop staging for a well-known theatrical scene in collaboration with a director, others designers, and performers, one or more of which will be refined and fabricated in Winter. The course is a collaboration between the Dept. of Architecture and Urban Design and the School of Theater Film & Television, supported by the UCLA Arts Initiative."

All I can say is: duh.  Will be posting work from this one.

Seasonal me

Summer is ending. No more hot sticky nights or heavy thick air. Gone are the days where my cat sleeps in the bathtub because my attic apartment is exceeding healthy temperatures. But, as the days become cooler I must say goodbye to the summer produce. So my last summer dish of the season I used every vegetable I had and welcomed fall open arms.

Sustainable Me

It is definitely no secret that I am a promoter of all things sustainable and that my obsession goes so far as to owning a worm bin to create my own compost. But despite my small efforts I feel like I am always battling the mindset of the community and the role they play in the environment. This became clear in my latest eco-adventure when I began picking up trash during my sunday morning walks. Raleigh isn't exactly the bustling metropolis that some of you live in, and well street sweepers do not exist. To make matters worse, I live in a mixed neighborhood of college kids, young family's, public housing and then million dollar homes (its all about location here.) I have past street trash every day to and from school and never thought twice about it. But here lies the problem, until people care, its going to remain. Saying this, the last three weeks I have collected 3 bags of trash and 4 bags of recyclables. Next time you head outside just take notice of what's left behind. You don't have to go as far as to pick it up, because believe me it is a nasty job, but to just become aware. Continue

shameless self promotion

As a freelance designer/artist I have come to appreciate the idea of "branding" oneself.  Here are a few things learned in my brief brainstorming process:

_I wanted my blog to have a vague name...something interesting but not something that would "pigeon hole" it.
_The name has to be completely unique (the hardest part)
_The name has to be versatile...something that can translate into a store name, a production company, a magazine etc. etc.

After a couple days of intense brainstorming, I finally came up with a name:
the hyper manikin

Not sure how focused I want it to be...or what I really want the blog to be about...but I feel like I shouldn't try to force anything...it will evolve naturally.

this is an old manufacturing depot that faces one of syracuse's major highways, 691. this is just moments away from downtown, and along the same path the erie canal used to follow. we're talking a perfectly good platform RIGHT by the interstate, elevated 30 feet in the air. right now, there is a lame mural of trains (in order to honor the history?) and a series of white mannequins in various positions on the waiting platform. sometimes they sport hawaiian leis. naida and i always talk about how neat it would be to be able to access it. you could imagine an intervention that must create some sort of hyper-protective (yet still transparent) space. protection against cars moving at unnatural speeds, transparency for the spectacle of that very speed.

i'm not sure if i'm forming a thesis here, or if i am inviting everyone to offer ideas as to a possible project proposal. i'll be sure to get more on this when i actually return to syracuse.
