directing debut (rough cut)

the ending is totally unresolved at the moment but i have a plan which involves projectors and spandex.  transitions still need a lot of work.

So calming to watch.
The balloon and the girl (you) obviously have some kind of central "story" in this, something that feels kind of like a promise?
There was only one transition that stood out to me as needing real work, which is right when the tall guy (not Ted) moved across the line of your body toward the water. There was a little jump that looked at first like the video skipped.
Who's the music by? I love it.

the music is by bon iver (i am totally obsessed with them at the moment). this project is for my experimental film class. the story is basically about the fading of a memory and the balloon is like a "little ball of sunshine" as my DP put it.

thanks for the feedback! i'll have the semi-final cut posted by the end of the week. the final screening is early december where we get to watch everything in the movie theater. this project almost makes me want to be a director.

sweet dude...you made a movie! i like the separation you create between you and the guys. My favorite part is 32-40 secs; however I wanted to see the wave crash across the line of the shot after you leave the shot to slow things down a bit. Joe Wright did similar shots in "Pride and Prejudice," when Elizabeth was walking. But I think it is lovely; nice to see you and Ted too.

yes, bon iver. i am also in love.

this is beautiful... I am excited to see the next iterations. I love the way the balloon is limply but beautifully dragging behind you... the color is perfect. It looks like a pet.

quality is outstanding...
did you guys storyboard it? i'd like to see some stuff about the process.

i really like the scenes where the camera is working in some relationship with the wave, like in the very last cut where it sort of spirals out while the wave is leaving, makes things really dynamic. gets rid of some of the cliche.

thanks. my DP is a good friend and he is very talented (also trained in architecture). my storyboards are shoddy but i can post those soon. the balloon was a totally last minute thing and i'm so glad i brought it in. the film changed a lot when we shot it, and again in the editing process.

i was inspired by "the red balloon", which i highly recommend if you haven't seen it. i think it's instant on netflix.

Kaitlyn,
This is beautiful! Just what I needed today in the midst of rolling downhill...a misty moment of melancholy. Love the yellow balloon. Accidents are sometimes/usually the best additions :) My favorite shot happens when the camera follows your body down to the balloon at your side. Such a lovely movement. A very sensual moment in the film.
Josh is right, it's great to see you!

belated comment, but i just watched and i feel like that film visually reflects my current mood. the ebb and flow of the tide erasing your footprints in the sand, the typified association of happy with the yellow color, and the overall contrast to the melancholy mood...love it all. ros said it best, a misty moment of melancholy.

i was also listening to laura veirs 'make something good' while watching, and it went well with the film.
