Pedestrian movement out of the area, and zones showing the dead space. Works, no/yes?
A little addendum to the last note session: this area is NOT, I repeat NOT the "South End." This is the portion of a three-neighborhood section of town called "South Boston", or if you prefer, "Southie." The bottom half of our peninsula is one of these neighborhoods, but the top half (the area we should be concentrating on) is still just shipping, hotels, and parking.
With the dotted lines I was trying to insinuate that the primary flux of traffic is leaving the area, not entering it. Do you think it works?
Obviously some labels need to be put on, even for those familiar with Boston.

With the Copenhagen Climate Conference currently underway, it is time to start really looking at the facts. Whether you believe in green house gases or climate change or if the Earth is cooling or warming that is irrelevant. Science has proven both cases and science has been fudged to prove both cases. John Stewart can catch you up! In the end, the world is changing and decisions need to be made. Although the video is an obvious push toward one side, and in my line of work neutrality is necessary, I thought it was informative and the graphics are neat too.

In doing this, we hope to increase pedestrian circulation from the Financial District into the South End, all the way to the port. The area offers a series of disconnected zones--dense brick studios > parking lots galore > convention center and hotels for those coming to Boston just to sit in their hotel lobbies and have meetings > shipping central.
I'm making a density map out of the South End and using it to call attention to the enormous amount of dead spaces, specifically parking lots. There are a LOT.
Our scrim boxes will entice from across the bridge as odd boxes on poles and trees, acting aslarge urban lamps.
As you move from the Summer/Congress Street bridges inward and move past the denser blocks of brick buildings, you move into a zone where you can either continue crossing the bridges to come to the Convention Center, or walk beneath the bridges to what amounts to a half a mile of parking lots.
Larger scrim boxes will be suspended above the parking lots, not so much as physical areas of congregation (which the rest of the scrim boxes are) but acting more like guideposts for continuing the journey toward the port.
Continuing from the parking lots is a more dense area full of hotels for professionals visiting the Financial District. Or the Convention Center. Or the World Trade Center. The hotel area iseconomic holy ground, but there is no pedestrian traffic. The few outdoor areas are sad.

This is getting too specific, but whatever. Temples and I have configured what elements we want on the board and who would be the best to realize them.
We want two very large renders showing the scale/population density/materiality of the scrim boxes. The title of our project should pose a provocative question, and these renders should be our visceral, visual reaction. But, they're also kind of just eye candy.
With these renders, we're going to concentrate not only on the scrim boxes, but also on the rendering the people--physically and emotionally. There will be "ticker tape" lines of dialogue spanning the renders, acting as thoughts and reactions of our population. These should represent what we're trying to accomplish with the scrim boxes--stop and smell the roses, ask your neighbor what these fucking ugly boxes are, whatever. The act of conversing/socializing is important, not the quality.
In addition to these renders, we'd like to make a film-strip of an area/multiple areas throughout the day, showing the change and increase in population density and also the physical qualities of the scrim and how our lighting system can change, or react (if we wanted to do motion-sensor leds).
In tandem with that film strip, we'd like to develop another film strip that mimics the action of the first, but deconstructs it as a series of elements, ending with what we would imagine is a construction-material diagram. The first would be rendered with photos, this one might simply be a collection of lines--perhaps the city skyline and then the elements we're bringing out, ie. showing just the scrim box as an element, showing how it's hung (via tension with local objects), etc. This diagram would show the ease with which the system could be mounted, because let's face it, the South End is broke as a joke.
So in the end, here's our final schedule/task list:

filmstrip 1 showing daylighting, density
DYLAN:
filmstrip 2 showing elements, construction--talk to Temples about this, I don't know if I did a great job explaining above
MADISON:

And then we'll do/edit the write-up together. Or Temples and I can do it.
Temples and I want to have prelim renders done by tomorrow so we can match the styles and everything. The final board can be pieced together on Thursday night--it's not due until Friday at 4.

ICE...it's what's for dinner.
This is the final stage in re-telling the vertical farm story. I'm amused at this backwards-fudging of "process"... This is the last thing I'm re-doing for this project, but it's the first thing I should have done during that semester: a study-model of ice.
I froze water in a Brita container which (of course) cracked in the process. The ice responded to the change in container shape, which gave the study model a cool ridge along the bottom. I used a heat gun to carve through the ice (why not?) which is a (bull-shit alert!!) representation of social and/or physical dynamics in Chicago -- how they might shape a building that "thaws" in response. (these could be physical or programmatic changes. probably both.)
Ice collects and refracts color. It splits light into mini-rainbows (I also have some photos of that...) and it freezes clear like glass, in crystalized bands that glitter, in bubbles, or in chunks of rough, white ice that collect light from the rest of the ice-chunk and glow. I got lucky - this model froze in all of those ways, I think because of the mid-freeze Brita-crack.

One Dozen Eggs = 60 Linear Inches
Photos in elevation didn't work, literally breaking the egg flat didn't work, but a simple pen and paper trace did. For a new project, I'm mapping the cracks of one dozen eggs, and creating a single linear "graph" of these events. You'd think it'd be simple, but things that are spherical, elliptical, endless, infinite, don't want to flat lines, anymore than they want to be broken. These are some photo studies I did, just some observations on the quality of the line that makes up an egg-crack. Much more to come...

great opening night! nibbles, booze, music, good vibes. it's such a foreign feeling to have people (strangers) observing your work... which is hanging on a wall... lit. surreal. a highlight was an old catalan man literally with his nose on the piece.
the piece documented 10 days of movement throughout the city. subtractive method on matboard+iodine+acrylic. basically one big experiment. detailed fotos to come!
