Ergovisual: Alternative Ergonomics

Resor House Collage, Mies van der Rohe. 1939

Resor House, digital reconstruction. Movement in a fixated field.

Resor House, digital panorama. Exterior views manifest a surface caught between image and boundary.

reimaging Mies's unrealized Resor House through a new surface typology, the Ergovisual. Literally meaning, a kind of visual working through of space according to natural laws of perception. The project takes ergonomics as a point of departure. It takes liberty, however, to invert this idea--introducing a surface that challenges our conventional means of experiencing space, suggesting alternative inhabitations and relationships between interior and exterior, depth and shallowness, surface and image.

counting the uncounted, y'all

one week till final review, and it's time to figure out how we got where we got, and where we need to go. the project explores the potentials of mapping an unampped demographic [the homeless] through the lens of GIS. in an attempt to pin down the patterns of a migratory population, we find the census's current procedures for counting transient populations produce numerous discrepancies/inaccuracies. this reveals gis's tendency to concretize the temporal. by working with TINS [relational data sets] and re-inputting new time sensitive data collected about the ameneties relevant to a certain population, GIS can be used to identify LATENT COMMUNITIES.

the drawing shows latent HOTSPOTS, or areas of the city particularly rich with amenities of use to the homeless. the green tin is derived from the amount of time soup kitchens open through the year relative to proximity of vacant parcels in the city. the chartreuse is based on bus route proximity to public parks.

the next step is to clarify what all this means for the way we think about the city in general, as well as what types of urban proposals we might suggest based on our findings.

it's time to pay a visit to LATENT CITY. it's the studio blog of the 3rd installment of the su soa's transdisciplinary media studio, a collaborative design studio that encourages the use of new techniques in digital media. this work is the result of the first workshop with mclain clutter, who developed these techniques along with mark linder in a past GIS workshop. what you see above is a TIN or TRIANGULAR INTERPOLATED NETWORK of data collected from census data in syracuse, ny.

ON THE PRODUCTION OF CULTURE is a roundtable discussion on the urban economics of arts organizations within New York City. This discussion will look into specific moments of innovation that have allowed for some of New York City’s most provocative cultural organizations to thrive.

The city’s urban condition is in many ways a continuous cultural experiment -- often necessitating innovation. Its economics are driving towards highly specialized districts that are as dense, large, and lucrative as possible. This challenges the ability for smaller businesses and particularly smaller cultural organizations to exist sustainably. It threatens the notion of the city -- offered by political scientist Iris Marion Young -- as place that is “heterogeneous, plural and playful, a place where people witness and appreciate diverse cultural expressions that they do not share and do not fully understand.” For New York City to maintain this effect on our world view, it must contain cultural organizations at an extreme variety of scales and genres. This discussion questions how visionary cultural progression is taking place within these seeming constraints of the city.
