design to execution: the plug-in house

A modular house fixed around a spine, which to me just looks like a long, strangely distressed hallway.

I don't have coherent thoughts right now, so I will just leave you with another link. I find the dead birds so disarming that I can't figure out if I like this or not.

ICE...it's what's for dinner.

This is the final stage in re-telling the vertical farm story. I'm amused at this backwards-fudging of "process"... This is the last thing I'm re-doing for this project, but it's the first thing I should have done during that semester:
a study-model of ice.
I froze water in a Brita container which (of course) cracked in the process. The ice responded to the change in container shape, which gave the study model a cool ridge along the bottom. I used a heat gun to carve through the ice (why not?) which is a (bull-shit alert!!) representation of social and/or physical dynamics in Chicago -- how they might shape a building that "thaws" in response. (these could be physical or programmatic changes. probably both.)
Ice collects and refracts color. It splits light into mini-rainbows (I also have some photos of that...) and it freezes clear like glass, in crystalized bands that glitter, in bubbles, or in chunks of rough, white ice that collect light from the rest of the ice-chunk and glow. I got lucky - this model froze in all of those ways, I think because of the mid-freeze Brita-crack.

One Dozen Eggs = 60 Linear Inches

Photos in elevation didn't work, literally breaking the egg flat didn't work, but a simple pen and paper trace did. For a new project, I'm mapping the cracks of one dozen eggs, and creating a single linear "graph" of these events. You'd think it'd be simple, but things that are spherical, elliptical, endless, infinite, don't want to flat lines, anymore than they want to be broken. These are some photo studies I did, just some observations on the quality of the line that makes up an egg-crack. Much more to come...

Movin’ on up from pixilated flowers and over-worked acrylics (offense intended).

Publication found on top of the trash can @ SYRA-JUICE, the best local campus eatery. Features a dank chicken burrito and chicken Caesar wrap… serves chips and salsa with everything. Anyway, these people know what’s up.

[Jerk Magazine is the premier student-run monthly publication at Syracuse University. The first of its kind, Jerk has set an unparalleled standard for campus magazines. In our efforts to “jerk” people out of their apathy, we have created a distinctive voice that is passionate and uncompromising, coupled with the visually arresting work of student artists.]

Mr. bolton‘s article “I’m not gay” (hit home) and ms. Holloway’s article “Cover that up” (on women in politics) are must-reads. All are online.

See their blog here.

[Warning: would like to point out that they posted lady gaga’s bad romance as well, but with a judgemental review and only two lame comments, one of which claiming her “attempt to be weird is really not unique”. Wtf. Has anyone forgetten the bitch can sing?]

The publcation is divided into the sections:

Smut (features)

Noise (art and music)

great opening night! nibbles, booze, music, good vibes. it's such a foreign feeling to have people (strangers) observing your work... which is hanging on a wall... lit. surreal. a highlight was an old catalan man literally with his nose on the piece.

the piece documented 10 days of movement throughout the city. subtractive method on matboard+iodine+acrylic. basically one big experiment. detailed fotos to come!

closing night party with performance pieces this saturday.

On being a woman, being an artist

This is a conversation between two women writers. To me, it is provocative, it's honest, it's raw, and the issues of womanhood tied to gender, tied to motherhood, tied to art, are real. Even if you aren't a woman you'll want to read this piece and if you are a woman you must. Enjoy!

Live SHIFT; Here Dylan

needs people, needs shadows, needs more ephemerality etc... damn pitas, got to work. What IF...People gathered on the sidewalk, to look up at the sky, or at their neighbor next to them, between an intersection and a parking lot, on the south end of Boston? What if, I parking lot, a billboard, an intersection, and a sidewalk were contained into a single intimate space, a place for gathering, looking, learning?

first chance to use multi local? maddie can tell us what boston needs.
Andrew Temples November 20 at 4:09pm Reply
Ain't no time boo. But good thing the whole point is that there is not point. Maddy, Look at the sites real quick and figure out what you'd like to happen there "what if this happened in boston".
Madison Meggs November 20 at 5:41pm Reply
I'm at work and this requires more thought than I can give right now, but my first inclination is to go with site #3. It's a series of bridges that connect downtown/financial district with South Boston, which kind of looks like Brooklyn.
Lots of BRICK and semi-brokedown. It has the children's museum and the Institute for Contemporary Art. There's also the Harpoon Brewery (which is awesome).
There's some cool shit, but it's hidden--starting point???
Madison Meggs November 20 at 5:42pm Reply
also, in general, Boston needs an artsy meeting place, kind of like the Bean in Chicago, but less tacky.
There's lots of design schools, and the Boston Center for Design, but there's no real touristy design spots that culture can revolve around.
Andrew Temples November 20 at 7:59pm Reply
ok, cool. It need a CHARGED VOID! How to charge a void, go!
Rambla style = crazy shit, prostitutes, human statues and bad food.
A Piazza! Space, infinite space!!!
What about a new Urban Coney Island? Hot dogs, and Funnel cakes.
Idk

Madison Meggs November 20 at 9:33pm Reply
another possible concept: using netting/screening to span the bridges and give hidden meaning to the views to South Boston?
I also read on the "shift" blog that much of the construction down their has been post-poned, and there is an ongoing "competition" for artists and designers to re-imagine these empty, halted spaces.
we could use these bridge span images to not only point to existing destinations in South Boston, but to trick the eye into imagining what COULD be in these empty holes left behind by the recession.
Not going to lie, I was totally inspired by Christo in this idea (his partner/wife Jean-Claude just passed away yesterday)
so many ideas! I'm getting excited! sexually.
Andrew Temples November 21 at 3:05pm Reply
OH SHIT! This Is good madison! WE should so do this!. What if.... LITERALLY FILL IN THE BLANK!
This kind of idea could be done really fast too. SCRIM
Dylan???!!>!?
Dylan K. H. Thomas November 21 at 12:33pm
why are we not using the blog for this?
i love all these ideas. are the boards in a position to appear as if they are in front of the area of concern? because i also love the thought of making an image and when you walk on this bridge it's like. look what could be behind this...

stop motion

For my digital media class, we are making stop motion videos in Photoshop.

The story behind mine is Ted goes to bed and my stuffed lamb, Bowie, gets up and runs into the bathroom, turns on the faucet and has an adventure in the bathtub. An octopus knocks over his boat and my stuffed Hippo, Eli, picks up Bowie and brings him back into the bedroom. Ted wakes up and goes into the bathroom and finds water at his feet and the octopus floats by. He picks up the octopus and looks confused. Blackout.

This is the first three scenes of mine. I do not have a title or a song to go with it. Suggestions are welcome.

Clients from Hell

They're all good, but this is my favorite:

  1. Client: Can you show me some shades of blue?
  2. Me: (Opens up Photoshop, Pulls up the color picker)
  3. Client: Nope! Can't see the one I want.
  4. Me: But... It contains ALL of the possible colors...
  5. Client: No, no, no. The one I want is not there.

what you need to know: a wall divides the building, reflecting programmatic "glimpses" to the outside, or non/future users. will be developing the surface to be increasingly performative, mainly dealing with (1) reflection and (2) transparency of program. hope to get super-site-specific soon. maybe some grasshopper action?
