The words he uses in the video below are what reminded me of your question. I think he says something about how he Thought he was dead, even though he was alive, all while watching the TV seeing a man die.
duuuh.
i think part of it is adrenaline. when i hit that deer i didn't really feel anything but it's probably the freakiest thing to ever happen to me. there is a certain line where clarity just won't happen because your mind won't let it.
the clarity is the lack of freakiness, the realization that death is a non-event.
